Epoxy Grout
Epoxy Grout is the only guarantee that your kitchen counter will not harbor bacteria such as Salmonella, e.coli, or staph. Antibacterial cleaners will not eliminate the possibility that these bacteria will be in your grout unless you soak the grout often with chlorinated products. These products will also break down the grout and make it more absorbent, unfortunately, so eventually it will disintegrate. Epoxy Grout requires about as much care as granite - sponge clean with warm soapy water or an antibacterial solution. Scrubbing is Not Required! Epoxy is stainless and permanent - GUARANTEED! Epoxy grout is a labor intensive high tech alternative to traditional cememtitious grout. Epoxy grout is a 3 to 4 part system consisting of a resin, hardener, filler, and possibly a stabilizer. The resin and hardener are mixed together and begin a chemical reaction that when cured or set forms a hard plastic compound. The filler is commonly sand and colorant giving strength, final appearance, and economy. Sand is both plentiful and durable here on planet earth. When sand is combined with the other components it will resist wear from foot traffic, not yield to chemicals, and introduce economy to the expensive resin and hardener by increasing volume. Along with sand, this color also contains colorant to determine the final color of the grout. Stabilizers for epoxy are becoming less common because the are often a fundamental ingredient. In essence stabilizers thicken the epoxy for vertical use. When epoxy is installed on a wall gravity may pull the (fluid) epoxy out of the grout joints. Stabilizers are also considered to make the epoxy easier to work with for the installers. Besides having a less fluid tendency, the stabilized epoxy will exhibit lees or no potential surface bubbling. Surface bubbling is the presence of small bubbles or rings on the surface or he grout in horizontal applications. These are a result of air mixed into the epoxy surfacing before curing is completed and popping leaving unsightly patterns. As for clean up of epoxy, it is not as simple to clean as cementitious grouts. The addition of the stabilizers aid in clean up. |
