Epoxy grout is becoming a more common alternative to the traditional cementitious grout. Briefly, epoxy grout is a chemical system that when cured or set forms a plastic filling between tiles. For more information, please go to the epoxy grout section of this site. Historically Grout, which dates back to 3000 BC, has simple been a cement like filler between tiles. It's purpose was to complete the protection of the wall and protect the tile edges. In 1824, Joseph Aspden, as stone mason, refined it to more like today's grout, a water based fine cement. Grout Tek uses two types of grout - the 1824 version modified for todays homes with latex acrylic fortifiers and colorants and Epoxy Grout. These new grouts add flexibility, durability and add a better water vapor barrier than older "installer" grouts. A word about MOLD, MILDEW AND OTHER ENEMIES OF THE HOME. Mold toxicity is not universal, however, some people have reactions to mold that run from mild irritation to acute and dangerous respiratory problems. Stop the mold before it has a chance to establish itself in your home. Once it gets into the walls and ductwork it is a major problem for the home owner and the home seller. It can reduce 2x4's to powder, insulation to black damp danger zones and can effect your health. When you see indications that moisture has become trapped behind your walls take action. The indications are discoloration of the wall, the grout or the tiles; a black dusty deposit where it doesn't belong; a soft shower wall that can be depressed by pushing on it. Take immediate action. Do not let you home be a home to mold or mildew. Contact Grout Tek and we'll advise you on the solution - even if it's not tile or grout related. |
